Thoughts on My First Time Offering Mini Sessions

If it’s okay to be honest on my own blog, here’s the truth: I wasn’t thrilled about mini sessions! This year, I set out to make it happen as a practice run, especially since it’s something I’ve wanted to try for a few years now. Though I didn’t *truly* have the time for it, I felt like it was now or never—especially with my husband’s truck as the main prop! He’s always swapping vehicles, so it seemed like a fun way to incorporate it before it might be gone.

I set up four different session days—Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Monday—and offered a discounted rate to friends and family from my church before opening it up publicly. In the end, only friends and family signed up, which was actually perfect for my first time around!

The late-fall timing, though, came with its own challenges. I underestimated just how different the lighting would be compared to early fall. The sun was in the “wrong” spot for both morning and evening sessions, and with everyone scheduled so close together, I couldn’t fully adjust the truck setup. Instead, I had to get creative and pivot to nearby backdrops that worked better in the changing light, but I also felt stuck needing to keep the truck in some of the photos since that was what everyone signed up for.

Another struggle? Mini sessions come with a limited number of digital downloads, and I found it hard to restrict the galleries. If I’ve already edited the photos, why not give them all to the families? But I know that’s how mini sessions are set up—to encourage sales of extra photos. I still feel a bit conflicted about it, though, and am considering a more flexible approach next time.

All in all, my first mini session experience wasn’t ideal, but I’m happy with many of the shots I captured for friends and family! Next year, I think I’ll aim for a field backdrop with more consistent lighting…or maybe even a flower field, if I can convince my partners at Samuel Cedars to plant one! Stay tuned!
